Spurs joined by Omar Marmoush to the delight of the fans.

De Zerbi then told Sportsfocus News he wanted one more big signing. That was believed to be Cody Gakpo – but City joined the race and it was clear that, if he were to leave, he would be going to Manchester.

After a disappointing defeat to Newcastle, Spurs fans woke up to another ‘bomba’, with a fee agreed with Everton for Iliman Ndiaye, and Richarlison going the other way. This is a player who would have got bums off seats. But on Monday, Ndiaye chose City and Richarlison publicly criticised the club.

Spurs then contacted rivals Chelsea for Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo. Mudryk’s arrival signifies the board and scouting department have given De Zerbi full backing.

Spurs and Chelsea do not do business. Times are changing, finances are changing, board members change. Mudryk is a big risk – he hasn’t played competitive football in nearly two years.

But if De Zerbi can get the best out of him, it could prove to be a shrewd signing. Chelsea’s insistence of a high loan-to-buy fee shows they haven’t totally given up on Mudryk either.
